Niagara County is mourning the death of Bill Ross, a longtime chairman of the Niagara County Legislature, educator and respected Niagara-Wheatfield football coach who died at the age of 92, county officials said Wednesday.

Born in 1933, Ross spent much of his life serving the Niagara County community, building a legacy that reached from education and athletics to local government and regional development. To many who knew him, he was simply “Coach,” a nickname that reflected his long career working with young people and his reputation as a mentor and leader.

Ross’ death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from current and former members of the Niagara County Legislature, who remembered him as a dedicated public servant, a gentleman and a person who consistently sought to bring people together.

Current Legislature Chairman Mike Hill said he was deeply saddened by Ross’ passing and described him as “a true gentleman, a dedicated public servant” who cared deeply about Niagara County and its residents.

Ross served as chairman of the Niagara County Legislature longer than anyone else in the body’s history, a distinction that Hill said demonstrated the trust and respect he earned from his colleagues and the community.

His public service extended well beyond the legislature. Ross served as a trustee of SUNY Niagara and was also a member of the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency, continuing his involvement in institutions that played important roles in the region.
